Preliminary Ecological Appraisal
A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) is an initial survey to assess the site’s ecological value. We use online resources to identify areas of importance for nature conservation and protected species records within the site and the wider area. A habitat survey, based on UKHab guidance, is conducted to identify the habitats present on site and identify signs of, or potential for, protected species. The findings are detailed in a report which summarises recommendations for how the proposed plans can take place within the parameters of environmental law and national and local planning policy. These recommendations could include further protected species surveys (if required) and strategies for avoidance, mitigation, compensation, and enhancement of any potential impacts.
Biodiversity Net Gain
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments provide a way of measuring the biodiversity value of a particular site both in a current state, and in a projected future state, allowing you to assess the perceived net change in biodiversity.
Development – For development, under the Environment Act 2021 and the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (as amended), all developers must deliver a 10% net gain which is required to be demonstrated pre-planning. Solent Ecology can provide this assessment and have experience liaising with a range of disciplines on project to achieve this mandated goal.
Landowners – By enhancing biodiversity on their land, landowners can generate income through the creation or management of biodiversity offsetting schemes. Landowners can contribute to long-term ecological health, promoting sustainable land management practices that enhance biodiversity, improve ecosystem services, and support local wildlife populations. Solent Ecology can provide the initial advice you need and undertake all baselining. Landowners who actively engage in BNG initiatives can benefit from positive recognition for their environmental efforts with many government programs and environmental grants encouraging landowners to improve biodiversity on their land. Engaging with BNG can open up access to such funding, making it more economically viable to invest in conservation efforts.
